The following link will direct you to one of the more disturbing articles
I have discovered recently online.
This link will actually take you
to an Australia newspaper article.
The article points out that tasers are now been used
in school bullying in the United States.
I am aware of the recent controversy about deaths by taser
when used by law enforcement even within Canada.
I surmised from police documentaries from the United States
that tasers were frequently used by their law enfocement officers.
I did not realize, however, that tasers are legal in all but seven states in the United States.
Some students are now tasering others and posting their exploits online.
One girl was shown crying when hit by the taser.
When the video was posted at YouTube,
many commenters tore down the student for her reaction.
Bullies will use whatever means at their disposal.
I was also suprised that tasers have been used by USA law enforcement
on numerous occcasions on school grounds.

I would like to direct you to this link from 2004
detailing how a 6 year old student was tasered by police in Florida!
                                  http://www.injusticebusters.com/2003/Tasers.htm

There was a move in Florida to attempt to
outlaw taser use on children.
The motion was overturned due to insufficent knowledge
of the effect of tasers on children.
I maintain that reason should in itself
serve as the basis to ban taser use on children!

On March 27, 2008 an 11 year old girl was tasered by a deputy in Florida
 for uncontrollable behaviour.
This incident is the third example this year in Orange County
of use of a taser on school grounds by police.
I must admit that I have never witnessed similar behaviour from children of that age
- such as punching a police officer.
I must also point out that her mother insists that the school is aware
that her daughter thinks like a five year old.
If this analysis is correct then the school and police were dealing
with a five year old girl in a 11 year old body who is reportedly big for her age.
Such a mix certainly calls for much discretion in the handling of the incident.
I have no expertise in police affairs but I don't think that it warrants the use of a taser.
I have seen some argue online that maybe the girl matched the female deputy in size.
I maintain that should necessitate police back up.

Here are some of the links to reaction about this story!
I have observed that many on both sides feel passionate about this issue.
I have also being suprised to read many hostile and indeed at times even racist comments!

There is a poll at this link surveying whether tasers should be used on children.
You can access the poll statistics.
At the time of my visit, I was surprised to see that 70% of entries
agreed with taser use by law enforcement on children!
The eleven year old leaves juvenile detention.
I am not very knowledgeable about the justice system in the United States
or indeed elsewhere.
I do have some concerns though in this regard.
Should arm and leg shackles be used on an 11 year old child?
Isn't there enough law enforcement presence in this setting to deem this unnecessary?
Was enough done to determine if the 11 year old indeed
only had the reasoning powers of afive year old child?
Was this entire scenario at school played out with the knowledge of this immaturity?
Or is the mothers' statement incorrect?

CBS REPORTS...

The following link directs you to
CBS News Correspondent Wyatt Andrews
report
about the increased use of tasers at schools by law enforcement.
A school principal wonders how they can contain out of control students
if they can't taser or arrest them.
There must be something amiss in a system if we have to resort to those options.
What would the suggestion for out of control children elsewhere in society
 - in our homes, in our hospitals, in our public places?
I doubt if there is anyone who has not witnessed an unruly child
in either, some,or all of those places!
The most frightening thought is that some are not even debating
the use of tasers at school.
They don't mind its use but debate about the nature of any incident
which would prompt its use.
We must remember that we are talking about a weapon
and there is still conflicting information about its safety.
A taser has been referred to as the safest weapon in this list
- batons, chemicals, police dogs
This safety comparison does not in any way alter my opinion
that taser use
should never be a possible component of a child's learning environment.
I urge you to view even just the first screen of the video at this page.
This is the image which meets the eyes of a distraught child during a taser attack!
This is the image observed by the other student bystanders!
This is ultimately the image of an adult - child interaction!
Can we expect a picture of a kinder, gentler society
to emerge from those disturbing images of real life?
Tasers don't belong in anyone's childood memories!

Even if students are not using tasers in Canadian schools,
the use of tasers by law enforcement has drastically increased in our country.
You can refer to this current newspaper article
out of Edmonton.
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/cbc/080324/canada/canada_rcmp_tasers
The RCMP does point out that tasers are an effective tool in law enforcement,
can save lives and should increase the public's confidence
 in their law enforcement agencies.

In December 2007,Ottawa police used a taser
to subdue a 17 year old student near a school.
The student was tasered but no charges were ever filed against him.

In March 2008 the RCMP announced that they would be limiting the key information
which they release about taser incidents.
This is troubling if there is an unfortunate future scenario
which involves students and police in a taser incident!
